For over 20 years, residents and visitors to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands have had access to services and resources that support economic and community development via the West Island Community Resource Centre (CRC).
The support provided by the CRC enables individuals and businesses to connect to technology, offering a space to share information & knowledge, build capacity and enhance community connection.
So it came with much excitement when the CRC expanded to Home Island on the 18th June 2025.
With West Island and Home Island geographically separated by a 9km stretch of water, the CRCs growth has meant all residents, no matter where they live, can access the invaluable services.
The Official Opening was attended by over 50 locals, who were joined by visiting VIPs like Aaron Johnston from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (WA, DPIRD).
Aaron spoke about the CRC in his address to the audience. Saying, the CRC is;
“built on local leadership and the understanding that services delivered by local people, for local people, are the most meaningful and effective. It’s also about connecting communities — helping bring important services, digital access, and opportunities closer to home.”
Also in attendance and representing the Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands was Nadya Adim who said;
“On behalf of the Shire, I want to say how inspiring it is to see this vision come to life.
The West Island CRC has shown our Islands many amazing initiatives and events over the years. They consistently demonstrate what is possible when our community is invested in and provided with tools to thrive – whether it is access to education, small business support, or a place to connect and collaborate.
Now, with this new branch, the CRC can extend that same opportunity and spirit of growth to Home Island. We know this centre will be more than just a building—it will be a hub for ideas, skills, community, and culture.
A place where stories are shared, projects are born, and futures are shaped.”
Guests were treated to a tour of the new premises, a kids colouring-in competition and a delicious selection of edible delicacies provided by local cooks.
Alongside the ribbon cutting ceremony, the Home Island office was given a traditional blessing by local Imam, Haji Adam.
The CRC Manager and Chairperson thanked everyone who attended, acknowledged the financial support provided by DPRID and made special mention of the CRC team who had poured hours of effort and energy into setting up the office and coordinating and hosting a wonderful opening event.
